May 1, 2007: May Day in Haiti

I'm here...finally! And I figured out how to connect to the internet! Yay!

I'm exhausted. I left New Bedford this morning at 4am and didn't reach Leogane until 8pm. The flight was delayed in Miami for over an hour for mechanical reasons. I tried not to think about what that could mean. I was so tired anyway that the next thing I knew we were taking off. I got to Port-au-Prince at 5pm and it took us 3 hours to drive to Leogane because it's May Day. The streets were overflowing with people dancing. It was fun, but driving around here in the dark is just scary. It appears that most places have no electricity and so we couldn't see a thing. There were still a million people walking around and on bikes, too, and we almost ran over a gigantic black pig that was sitting in the middle of the road!!! We made it safely to the Hôpital St. Croix, my new home, and I went directly to bed. I’ll be staying in the guesthouse (located next door to my apartment) for a while until the repairs are completed in my apartment.
