We got up bright and early to leave for Port-au-Prince. By 9am we had dropped Ashley off at the airport and Jean-Claude and I were on our way to Scotia Bank in Petionville (where all the rich people live) so I could get some money. I’ve yet to find anyone who knows where an ATM is located, so I had to get a cash advance on my credit card since I didn’t bring enough cash with me. It took forever to do. From now on I’ll bring plenty of dollars with me.
The Caribbean Supermarket was great. I can get almost anything I will ever want there, although I did not see any soy milk or tofu. That was disappointing.
I also moved into my apartment today! Amazingly the things that needed to get done all got fixed today! All in one day and in a matter of a few hours! I bet that never happens again. My plan is to spend the weekend cleaning and organizing.
And I will have a neighbor! I’m so excited!!! I was a little worried that I was going to get pretty lonely here (I’m still a little worried about that actually). Turns out there are two Cubans, a doctor and a nurse, working at the hospital. They have been at the Hopital St Croix for 2 weeks now and are living in the horrible doctor’s quarters on the roof of the hospital. They jumped right on the offer from Ashley to move into the other CNP apartment next to mine. It will actually just be Frank, the doctor, who will live there. The nurse (whose name I should know, but can’t remember) will stay in the doctor’s quarters because there is another female lab technician who will be arriving next week. Frank speaks perfect English and Creole which is just great for me (I will definitely have him help me out around the hospital!). The nurse only speaks Spanish. It turns out that they are working in Haiti because they make more money here than they do in Cuba. Frank said that as a doctor in Cuba he was making about $25 a month!!! I was just blown away. They are making much more than that here and hoping to save a lot of money. They told me they will most likely be here for about 2 years. Frank is 28, but the nurse is 47, married, and has 2 young children back in Cuba. Frank was telling me that he has no idea why she is here and that she is very unhappy. Frank on the other hand seems to like it and is having a great time.
