May 5, 2007: Saturday

Last night was my first night sleeping in the apartment. I was exhausted and went to bed around 9pm. The pouring rain created a nice cool breeze coming in through the window. Still, with just the fan on it was 87 F in my bedroom. Not too hot yet (for me anyway), but bordering uncomfortable. My new green mosquito net did a great job at keeping out the mosquito that had been flying around in the bedroom all day. The fan is really quiet and the AC wasn’t working. There was nothing to drown out the very loud quacking/croaking sound outside. At first I thought there was some sort of night market out on the street. That’s just too strange though. The sound wasn’t constant either. It was annoying me like anything so I had to listen to my Ipod to fall asleep. A few hours later when I woke up the croaking sound was still there and so I decided it had to be frogs. It went on all night. Luckily I was eventually tired enough to just fall asleep.

I woke up at 7am to someone yelling angrily about something out by the hospital (which is right across from my apartment). Right after that we lost power again and this time no generator started up. Leogane is loud at 7am on Saturday morning. Many cars, trucks, and motorcycles buzzing by and honking outside the window (the same honking courtesy rules that apply in Bangladesh also apply here), a rooster cockadoodledooing in the distance, people talking (very loudly), someone repairing something at the hospital – loud scraping / shovelling of gravel sound, oh and the occasional blast of Compa music from a passing car. It’s 7am. I don’t get up at this early on Saturday.
